Sales targets
Define revenue goals for sales reps over a date range, optionally by product line.
Sales targets define revenue goals for sales reps over a date range, providing benchmarks to measure performance against. Targets can be set at the overall level or broken down by product line.
Why sales targets matter
- Set clear goals: give each rep a defined revenue target for a period
- Track performance: compare actual sales against targets to measure progress
- Product line granularity: set separate targets for different product lines to align with business priorities
Core concepts
Two types of targets
| Type | Scope | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Sales target | Overall revenue for a rep | Total revenue goal across all product lines |
| Product line sales target | Revenue for a specific product line | Targeted goal for a particular product line |
Structure
Every sales target includes:
- Sales rep: the team member the target applies to
- Date range: start and end dates defining the target period (e.g., Q1 2025, January 2025)
- Target amount: the revenue goal as a currency value
Product line sales targets also include the specific product line the goal applies to.
Where sales targets are used
- Sales team management: targets are set alongside territory assignments to define rep expectations
- Reporting: compare actual revenue against targets to evaluate rep and product line performance
